José Dolores «Don Lolo» Sequeira Romero

     Don Lolo Sequeira Romero was the Colibri Tours founder, in company of his wife Julia Ávalos Marenco. Mrs Ávalos passed away on March 6th, 2007. Don Lolo passed away on December 9th, 2021.

     Don Lolo was born on September 18th 1932, in Caño Negro de Los Chiles, Alajuela. Don Lolo and Doña Julia got married in 1957, when he was 24 years old and she was 17 respectively, and they had eight children.

Don Lolo was a self-taught Costa Rican tour-guide.

     He was known as a man with nobility, of firm moral principles and a hard-worker, a lover of reading and knowledge, a self-taught. He participated in different community groups that sought the development of the town of Caño Negro, as well as he promoted the protection of the Caño Negro Lagoon, today Caño Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge.

     Around the year 2000, at the age of 68, he started a project as a tour operator called Colibrí Tours.

He worked on it for 21 years, until his 89.
Colibri Tours closed operations on June 26th, 2024.

     On the other hand, doña Julia made paintings and souvenirs to offer to tourists, all of them made by hand. 

     Also, she studied about the butterflies with a local women`s group, and created her own butterfly garden. Doña Julia cared for the butterflies at different stages of their metamorphosis, until she passed away in March, 2007.

     Don Lolo, also started the registration of his stories, because he liked to narrate. He had many anecdotes about his childhood, businesses, and the development of Caño Negro town. Family, friends, and tourists enjoyed listening to him.
